Lanakila

Lanakila came about as a result of friends in Hawaii telling me that they would like to commission a painting. I came up with a design, and while they were underwhelmed, I felt the need to get it out of me, anyway. Their painting will come later.

My original idea was to paint it in an older Hawaiian style, which was considerably different from my own style. The biggest problem with that was that I got to a certain point, decided I hated it, and would not work on it. So, I consulted with my fellow artist and friend, Briana Hume to figure out what would make it better. Her viewpoint was, as it often is, "throw more paint on it till something starts working for you". So, I did. This is, however, one of those paintings that I will continue to work on, as long as it is in my presence.

As I worked, I realized I wanted to tell a story.Thinking of the people of Lahaina and all they have been through, I chose the name "Lanakila", which means victorious in Hawaiian. She is a strong woman, determined to look forward joyfully to better days ahead, leaving destruction behind.
